The signature event of “Fighting for the Fortress” is the Re-enactment of the Siege of Fort Niagara, July 3-5, 2009, and will be the largest such event ever held on the grounds of Old Fort Niagara. | The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University presents an exciting new Folk Art exhibit that explores the world of domestic and occupational aprons by combining three exhibits into one. Part one of the exhibit features a diverse selection of 47 aprons from the personal collection of Mrs. Karen Anderson of Lynn Center, Illinois. Entitled Artistic and Functional: Aprons from the Karen Anderson Collection, these aprons demonstrate the ingenuity of American women who created aprons from recycled materials, such as dresses, curtains, blue jeans, and feed sacks. Part two of the exhibit, called Aprons from a Local Kitchen Drawer, is comprised of aprons collected by Catherine Hackenheimer (February 7, 1857—April 1, 1952), the grandmother of Castellani Art Museum volunteer Jean Hackenheimer. Part three of this exhibit, entitled Aprons at Work, includes a series of eight occupational apron portraits that show how people use aprons on the job. Lauren Tent of the CEPA Gallery took these photographs with the intention of highlighting the role that aprons play as protectors of people’s lives, not just their wardrobes.
