The Dawn of New Horizons
Fri. Jul 25 to Sat. Sep 6 2008
Fri: 6:30PM & Sat: 1:00PM
This program highlights two current NASA
projects. Dawn, a mission to asteroid Vesta
and minor planet Ceres, was launched on
September 27, 2007. NASA is studying these
worlds to determine what roles size and water
play during the formation of planets. As the
two largest protoplanets, Vesta and Ceres may
both contain vital clues to determining how a
solid planet such as Earth developed billions of
years ago. New Horizons left Earth on January
19, 2006. Currently approaching the orbit of
Saturn (Saturn itself is not in this position); New
Horizons is on its way to Pluto and is due to
arrive in 2015. Both missions are significant
because they help us to understand planetary
formation and evolution within our solar
system. h/c access, $
