“Student Interpretation of the Nichols School Collection,” featuring artwork by various artists
Fri. Jan 18 to Sat. Mar 23
This exhibition incorporates work from Nichols
School’s five permanent art collections and new
work by current students. The students studied
the artists and the work in the Nichols School
Collection and after reviewing the artwork, each
student selected a piece to use as inspiration for
their project. Each student developed and
executed the project based on their interpretation
of the original collection artwork. The exhibition
will feature a selection of student work alongside
the collection piece that inspired it.

“The Nichols School Art Collection is a highly
exceptional survey of work in all media by artists
who are acclaimed locally, nationally and
internationally,” said Gerald Mead, art collector
and independent curator. “Displayed throughout
the school campus, it provides an invaluable
opportunity for students, faculty and staff to
continually encounter and be inspired by original
works of art. This encyclopedic collection,
particularly rich with exemplary work by many of
Western New York’s most prominent artists, has
been described as ‘hidden in plain sight.’ Perhaps
it is that spirit of discovery with which these
works are viewed in the school’s hallways, offices
and classrooms that make this important
collection all the more special.”

In the Boocock Reading Room, the work of
internationally acclaimed contemporary artist,
Laylah Ali ’86, shares a wall with the beloved area
artist, Catherine Koenig. In the Upper School
faculty room, works by Salvatore Dali hang, and in
the Middle School faculty room, Charles
Burchfield’s work on paper, “Plan for a Toy Bank,”
can be examined as one pours coffee. Nichols has
a commitment to art that extends beyond its
studios and curriculum. The diaspora of artwork
in offices, classrooms, hallways, lecture halls and
more mark the importance of art at the school.
The question was posed: How has this work,
which is part of a rich and dedicated tradition at
Nichols, remained hidden to many of its students
and the greater community for years?

The exhibit will feature artwork from the Nichols
School Collection, which includes work by Monica
Angle, Jim Bird, Catherine Koenig, Grace
McKendry, Catherine Parker, Walter Prochownik
and Peter Stephens, in addition to various works
by current Nichols School students.

Opening reception is Thursday, Feb. 7

2013 Conservation Tree & Shrub Seedlings Available
Thu. Jan 24 to Wed. Mar 13
8am-5pm
Order forms for the 2013 Conservation Tree and
Shrub Seedling Sale are now available from Erie
County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The District is offering many varieties of
conservation trees and shrubs, wildflower seed
mixes, and seedling packets which have
combinations of trees and shrubs chosen to
attract, feed and shelter birds, butterflies and
other wildlife. Landowners can practice
conservation by planting seedlings and wildflowers
to provide wildlife food and habitat, shelter crops
and landscape, reduce heating/cooling expenses,
protect water quality, reduce air pollution, and
stabilize erodible land. Seedlings are also an
inexpensive alternative for replacing trees that
have been damaged or lost.

Thirty-two species of trees and shrubs are
available this year. The one-to-three-year-old
bare root seedlings, which range in size from 6 to
24 inches, are available in lots of 10 to 500. The
District is offering an expanded selection of four-
year-old evergreen transplants which are more
mature trees with thicker stems, more branching
and more developed roots. Also, a new seedling
introduction to the 2013 program is the broadleaf
tree Shagbark Hickory.

The District also stocks marking flags, fertilizer
tablets, and tree shelters to help promote the
success of your plantings. Bluebird nest boxes can
be ordered through the program or be purchased
at the District office.

Order forms may be obtained by stopping at the
District office at 50 Commerce Way in East Aurora
(behind Post Office), by calling (716) 652-8480
ext. 5, or by printing the order form from the
District website at www.ecswcd.org. Orders are
due by March 15, 2013 and pick-up will be on
Saturday April 13, 2013 at the Fairgrounds in
Hamburg.
